December – Rubus thibetanus Silver Fern

This is a great shrub to use for winter and summer interest. In summer the foliage has a lacy look with a silvery under leaf. In the winter the stems are covered in a bright white bloom. This upright shrub will need some space as it grows to 2m high and 2m wide. Avoid planting near paths as the stems are covered in prickles.
To make the most of this shrub plant with other winter shrubs and perennials such as brightly coloured dogwoods and then underplanted with Cyclamen and Hellebores. A dark green yew hedge would make an ideal backdrop.
